cady coleman is already from reactor number one in the radiation levels are much higher then or do you need it to be safe i'm sure to turn it into pretty much coming up we have all the detailed. plans to expand its air strikes to libya's northwest while colonel gadhafi used to use a high profile chess game to reiterate his reluctance to leave the country plus. there is this new media hype over the scandalous case of an american senator tweeting the racy pictures of himself to spot concerns that the u.s.
7:01 am
is letting gossip overshadow the real news. a very warm welcome to you this is r.t. live from moscow. now radioactive material has been detected in cymbalta around japan's fukushima plant with concentration levels two hundred forty times higher than safety limits scientists warn that the element strontium is highly dangerous to humans as a kind of cumulated bones and possibly cause cancer shawn thomas has been to fukushima city to measure the radiation levels. here were eighty kilometers away and the radiation levels in this area in many many phrase there are many. or really close because if you look at a map of where pretty much
7:02 am
a city is in relation to the actual nuclear facilities that plant number one where a lot of bad radiation. and relating from look at wind are bringing that radiation . and shameless. city and the rain in the wind is blowing the radiation in this direction so we were at a spot where the radiation levels were one thousand times what is considered to be a safe dosage so. very very dangerous levels and so scientists so that we're working with today from different universities are working together on projects to try to figure out ways to use a simple methods to actually clean that radiation up and these guys actually. are working if they can contaminate the soil right now. and as you can see the two women are wearing any protective clothing clothing from the scientists are one of the concerns is that you can actually have one spot which is only thirty times in
7:03 am
the accepted normal levels and then you go to another spot which is just a meter away and it can jump to five hundred to a thousand times depending on where rain water and mud have collected one of the concerns of course is that grass is you can see filter for nuclear. material and. draw into grassy places when they go to those areas they could actually be absorbing more radiation from the grasses well so look interesting is this area that we're in right now is considered a safe area it is not considered a mandatory evacuation area but authorities are looking into to see whether it should be considered evacuation or at least hot spots within the city should be a back waited because of these very very high micro places the smoke. if you will where the radiation is just up the charts. so now let's get some more insight from japan we're joined by james corbett who's the editor of the independent news website called report dot com so as we've just heard from our
7:04 am
correspondent the levels of radiation in some spots eighty kilometers away from the plant are a thousand times higher than normal people that they thought would risk you think. well i think i think that question in a way presupposes the answer because as we know from the air seven report put out by the national academy of sciences back in two thousand and five there is no such thing as a safe level of radiation exposure and that any level of radiation exposure increases the risk of cancer and however negligible that risk may be with any particular person on any particular date any particular spot when it's averaged out over a large population like is living in the fukushima region unfortunately means there will be over time and increase in in cancer rates there and really just a question of how many and this point we obviously can't say because if we don't even at this point know the extent of the scope of of the radiation danger but but as that report reveals it's obviously much higher than it's been previously supposed to do much higher than has been reported but when you're talking about
7:05 am
issues of cancer let's talk about the chemical of a strong to your more high concentration of strontium detected in the sea and ground water near the fukushima plant what kind of dangers does oppose in comparison to the leaks that we are all really over. well that's a that's a good question and i think one of the one of the big issues here is simply the amount of radioactive water that already exists so any new leaks of any kind are going to be an incredible burden on the efforts that are already on underway to try to clean up the water contaminated because they are now running out of space to actually store the contaminated water in the fukushima in the immediate vicinity of the plant and i believe within two weeks they're actually going to run out of space so they're trying to get a system on line for treating the water but apparently they had to test for that is going to be pushed back another few days it's already been pushed back from last friday and it's maybe not scheduled to start until tuesday or wednesday so so at
7:06 am
this point it's becoming a very grim situation and any new leaks i think will only burden the efforts that are already underway to try to decontaminate the incredible twelve hundred tons of contaminated water that are already seeping out per day for an orrible tragedy now as you mentioned the issue of running out of space where you store contaminated water and other radio active materials are three months into the crisis thousands of evacuees are still stuck in crowded temporary shelters and what does the immediate future look like for them at this point. well unfortunately it's just about as bleak as it's been at any point in the past three months certainly three months in the still living in emergency shelters and. many of them have been relocated several times now to schools and places where they are originally staying open for the new school year back in april and they were kicked out of various gyms and other facilities that they were using at that time so so it's really quite a grim situation for those who are still evacuees but even even the people who do
7:07 am
actually have problems and residences in the area and are in somewhat of a stable condition they are still unfortunately going to be suffering the effects of this for a long time it's thirty one with radiation and the media is telling people here that it's just a question of wearing long sleeves and trying to stay stay out of the rain if possible but it's going to be. quite a difference to their daily lives i would imagine. that the media there could be downplaying the severity of this ongoing tragedy but you mention it being a grim situation you're in japan right now i mean is there any sense of optimism among the people that an end to the crisis could be approaching. i don't think so i don't think optimism would be the right word i think from what i've seen it's more of a question of well we'll have to put up with this too so people are beginning to adjust their their lives and routines and we see that in all sorts of different aspects of daily life here but but one of them is the introduction of a new phenomenon called super cool because where in an effort to save air
7:08 am
conditioning because obviously there's a lot less electricity available for the tokyo area businesses are no converting to very casual where there are there are changing business hours to try to accommodate . the more so daylight savings and that sort of thing so so there is just every day types of shifts in people's schedules and routines that are being made and i think people are just putting up with it and and as far as seen into this or seeing some sort of hope in this i just don't see that at this at this point so you say not a sense of optimism among the people there in japan but certainly some lifestyle changes being made to adjust journalist and to all of colbert report dot com thank you thank you. about thousands have been out on the streets of athens in protest against the second round of austerity measures debated in the greek parliament people don't want new taxes or wage cuts but without them the country won't receive international bailout cash sarah ferguson athens.

there you can see how many people at times to the right. no no no they. can. be measured. by the government that would be making people think that the bank is going to be building three yet they've already been. very very good they paid the government have to keep anything by that i mean they need. a lot of pension almost three. was a great. time a. great thing that. people. simply didn't think that way oh it certainly seems about might be the case. that particular ferry connections will have to be implemented if planes want to continue i think the international bell out money now this comes on the package they get the relief last week they say that sixty percent of the green plant both are out in the field i
7:10 am
still think forty feet of it been thank you for your all powerful what we've spoken to some of the younger people here they say tell me i'm sorry i think they're right there but what we should put the blame is on. the voting system that the talks good but the people of this doesn't have to do anything. but stray from the they can do it game and that's why we came here to tell them that they are incapable of saving us and we want to. go our way make up elections now and that may get a new government but we shall pass and out people that include money to the budget . saying it we're paying it back by. price. by not by think you can.

for well over two weeks sen tweeted a young woman with a racy photo of himself since then the story has been overshadowing world news with some media putting it ahead of the war in libya and raging violence in syria now if you use a gun in a look so where priorities lie in of the american media doesn't know the american media can't get enough anthony weiner's crotch shot marrieds u.s. congressman had sent this lewd photo to a young woman via twitter and that story made it perfectly sexy again nothing but the feeling was a cover up this is a twitter hopes a prank that was done on the victim of this poor girls the victim of a subsequent embarrassing compassion last friday night i tweeted a photograph of myself that i intended to send as a direct message as part of a joke to a woman in seattle once i realize i posted to twitter i panicked i took it down and said that i had been hacked and of course. i am deeply sorry for the pain this is

caused by whites. and our family. it seemed anthony weiner's indiscretion overshadowed all other news in america we know when or if we are when are we in or is this you we dated for a few months like almost ten years ago to the great point even comedians for whom the congressman's heart sure has become a bottomless source of inspiration for you describe it american history you can see i think your her as i. thank you of course. could have been blocked by this recent scandal on a more serious note many people think the only way to get ratings this is to lead and constantly churn and cover these types of lascivious stories that really don't have any bearing on people's lives whether or not it's a private issue that has affected nobody for the people involved the media pressure is so high that it has become a trend in america to make equally personal apologies on camera and everybody who
7:14 am
has been hurt. you know. the same goes for celebrities like tiger woods' extramarital affairs made headlines for months i am deeply sorry for my irresponsible and selfish behavior i engaged in the apologies seem to kill the gossip industry even more when politicians stage and i do use this word staged these apology kind of. they are very likely responding to their public relations. visors their lawyers etc etc i mean and the networks american media companies love it because again it generates even more scandal american television don't make me feel old hand with our analyst miles courts and. police is endless and all of these scandals have to do with private matters
